Frequency Analysis of Running the Amber Light at Road Intersections

The road intersection countdown signal is a kind of intersection warning facility, and it is a necessary equipment in the current traffic control signal system. The countdown display is to remind the time when the light color changes, and it can help the driver make an appropriate choice when the color of the traffic light at the intersection changes. However, various regions and their researchers have different opinions on the application of countdown signals at intersections. The following is an explanation and analysis by Sinowatcher Technology:

Running the amber light refers to the behavior that a motor vehicle does not follow the warning to stop when encountering an amber light at an intersection, but continues to pass. Road Traffic Safety Law stipulates that an amber light indicates a warning, and stipulates that motor vehicles should slow down when they encounter an intersection. Vehicles that have crossed the stop line can continue to pass when the amber light is on, and vehicles that have not crossed the stop line should stop.

There are several reasons for running the amber light.

Firstly, what is in front of the driving vehicle is a larger vehicle. Since the sight is blocked, and the driver just wants to pass as soon as possible, only to find that he has run the amber light when he reaches the crossroad;

Second, when approaching the intersection, the driver did not slow down in advance. When he arrived at the intersection, he suddenly found the amber light flashing. For fear of causing passenger injuries, he did not dare to brake quickly, so he had no choice but to force his way through.

However, in the actual investigation, it was found that it was precisely at the intersection of the countdown lights that the behavior of running the amber light increased greatly, which is just the opposite of the above reasons. Actual investigations show that most people will run the amber lights, but it happens occasionally. Therefore, in real life, we should strengthen the publicity in this respect. We should try our best to "prefer to wait for some minutes instead of hurrying to a second", so as to reduce the occurrence of running amber lights.

By comparing and analyzing the frequency of running amber lights with or without a countdown, the results show that at intersections with a countdown, there are significantly more running amber lights than at intersections without a countdown. Therefore, the application of countdown will not only prompt the driver, but also allow some people to speed up to cross the intersection at the end of the green light or amber light, which will directly cause traffic safety hazards, which should be corrected by strengthening management and publicity and education to correct this bad driving behavior.
