Wireless Vehicle Detection System - Magnetometers
These units constantly measure the Earth’s magnetic field, and can determine the presence of a vehicle when the magnetic field changes.
Currently, this technology is available as a small unit (detection sensor) which is installed, by core drilling a hole in the surface of the carriageway;
the unit is placed in the hole and sealed in place with a cover (see video below).
Magnetometer detectors are battery powered, with a life expectancy of at least 5 years.
They communicate via a wireless link, which results in the units not having to have any cable connections to them at all.
Therefore, there is no requirement for ducts and pits for detection, which is one of the costlier elements of a new traffic signal installation.
